{"id":24,"date":"2025-12-11T17:23:42","date_gmt":"2025-12-11T17:23:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/eutonom.eu\/marianafigueiredo\/?p=24"},"modified":"2026-01-15T23:58:08","modified_gmt":"2026-01-15T23:58:08","slug":"st-vincent-de-paul-news-article","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/eutonom.eu\/marianafigueiredo\/2025\/12\/11\/st-vincent-de-paul-news-article\/","title":{"rendered":"SVP Warns Families Will Have To Choose Between Food or Heating This Winter Following Budget 2026"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><em>This year\u2019s budget saw much needed increases to specific areas but SVP (Saint Vincent de Paul) says that many will still struggle with essential costs this winter.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>IRELAND\u2019S leading poverty and homelessness charity SVP says Irish families will have to choose between putting food on the table or heating their home this winter, as the government fails to help make ends meet with the latest budget.<\/p>\n<p>The SVP welcomed the increases of \u20ac0.65 to the minimum wage, \u20ac10 increase to Jobseeker\u2019s payments and the \u20ac5 increase to the fuel allowance but these measures still \u201cfall short\u201d of the minimum standard of living rate of \u20ac15.40, according to the annual MESL (Minimum Essential Standard of Living) survey.<\/p>\n<p>SVP spokesman, Jim Walsh says:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis year\u2019s budget, the society found, had a lot of things that were welcome but unfortunately, they weren\u2019t strategic and there is still no appearance of a plan to help poverty.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPoverty is a much greater issue in Ireland than many people realise\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The poverty levels in Ireland are at an all-time high, with 5% of people being in consistent poverty, which has increased from 3.6% and 11.7% of people are at a risk of poverty \u00a0which has increased from 10.6% according to the CSO (Central Statistics Office) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cso.ie\/en\/releasesandpublications\/ep\/p-silc\/surveyonincomeandlivingconditionssilc2024\/\">Survey on Income and Living Conditions<\/a> (SILC).<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-54 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/eutonom.eu\/marianafigueiredo\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/26\/2025\/12\/Picture1-1-300x185.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"754\" height=\"465\" srcset=\"https:\/\/eutonom.eu\/marianafigueiredo\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/26\/2025\/12\/Picture1-1-300x185.png 300w, https:\/\/eutonom.eu\/marianafigueiredo\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/26\/2025\/12\/Picture1-1.png 579w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 754px) 100vw, 754px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Chart: Mariana Figueiredo \u2013 Source: SILC 2025\/CSO \u2013 Created with Google Sheets<\/p>\n<p>The SVP says there are currently 300,000 Irish homes behind on their energy bills, a further 170,000 in arrears with their gas bills and with the abolishment of energy credits, the charity fears the increase in fuel allowance is not enough and many families will struggle to heat their home this winter.<\/p>\n<p>The budget has left several people with no confidence in the government\u2019s attempts to tackle the cost-of-living crisis, which will cause many of these people to turn to charities like the SVP for help.<\/p>\n<p>The charity has received on average 250,000 calls per year for the last 3 years, with this year being no exception, as many are living from wage to wage in order to stay afloat.<\/p>\n<p>Jim Walsh commented on this saying:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt the moment, calls are up just under 10%.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNovember and December bring a lot of calls from people looking for help for Christmas and indeed for energy because we\u2019re going into the winter season.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The SVP are the largest voluntary charitable organisation in Ireland, active for 181 years and have over 10,000 active members. Their focus is on \u201calleviating the impacts of poverty by engaging in direct person to person assistance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The charity will launch its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.svp.ie\/christmas\/\">Annual Appeal<\/a> on November 17<sup>th<\/sup> with many fundraising events and provisions set in place to aid those in need.
